With the arrival of spring, it is common to see wildlife in and around our local neighborhoods. Yesterday, we received a report of a bear spotted on the Rotary Trail behind the Hilltop Inn. Animal attacks are uncommon; however, it is important that students take precautions and be prepared if they come across a wild animal.
Please take some time to review the following Wildlife Safety Guidelines with your child.
Walk in groups and make lots of noise. Do not walk alone.
Be alert and aware of your surroundings. Do not use headphones when walking on trails.
Use sidewalks along the road instead of shortcuts through forest or shrubby areas.
Avoid areas of possible food sources (ie. berries, fruit trees, animal carcasses etc.).
Ensure all food waste and garbage is disposed of properly in compost or garbage bins.
If you do see a bear/cougar, keep calm, make yourself looks as large as possible, back away slowly, speak in a loud low voice if the animal continues to approach.
Do not run away as sudden movements may provoke an attack.
Never approach a bear, cougar, moose or any other wild animal.
